Charlie R Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 Found where the service conductors were spliced between the main panel and the meter. I thought that the conductors were not allowed to be spliced, or at the least the splices need to be in an approved junction box. I'm looking for confirmation I am correct on this, but if I'm not, then why is this correct? I couldn't get under the painted over tape to see what kind of clamps were used. rkenney Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 230.46 Spliced Conductors. Service-entrance conductors shall be permitted to be spliced or tapped in accordance with 110.14, 300.5(E), 300.13, and 300.15. 110.14 (B) Splices. Conductors shall be spliced or joined with splicing devices identified for the use or by brazing, welding, or soldering with a fusible metal or alloy. Soldered splices shall first be spliced or joined so as to be mechanically and electrically secure without solder and then be soldered. All splices and joints and the free ends of conductors shall be covered with an insulation equivalent to that of the conductors or with an insulating device identified for the purpose. Wire connectors or splicing means installed on conductors for direct burial shall be listed for such use. Section 300 deals with underground cables, raceways and such. Main thing is it has to be an approved type splice (won't know without disassembly) and must be insulated as well or better than the SEC cables that are being spliced.
Jim Katen Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 The splices aren't a problem, but the workmanship is.
John Kogel Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 That would not be allowed here, even on a temporary pole. Number two is it is an extreme shock hazard. I believe number one reason for not allowed here is - it would be too easy to tap in above the meter with jumper cables. Can't have that. []
Charlie R Posted August 29, 2013 Author Report Posted August 29, 2013 Thanks for the quick replies, much appreciated. Charlie
