Ohio Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 I'm looking for any info./guidance on the installation of direct set triple pane windows that do not have a sash. The windows are 76 by 34 inch units that will be replacing the old direct windows in a wood curtain wall in our passive house's solarium. The old install was poorly done and we want to get it right this time. Are there any installation guides for installing direct set windows and does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.

Hire a glass guy who specializes in storefront installations. He'll have access to a glazing system that will actually work. If you insist on doing it yourself, you'll need to find a pre-manufactured glazing system and learn how to install it properly. If you try making up some kind of Mother Earth Hippy Dippy system on your own, it will leak and rot.
kurt Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Sounds like an old "sliding glass door replacement panes" arrangement. Lotta those from the 70's and 80's. There are stock glazing channels for setting those type panes. Here's one; they're all kinda similar. http://polygal-northamerica.com/aluminum_systems.php
KStaudt Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 There are lots of companies that provide quality commercial curtain wall glazing in aluminum frames. The problem is they all look like commercial store fronts. High quality wood direct-set windows are hard to find. Local millwork companies often offer products that typically do not perform well. The windows leak and the wood rots in short order. Try Renaissance Conservatories. This company has considerable experience solving problems like yours. They work anywhere in North America. They build custom wood window wall systems, glazed roof systems, skylights and conservatories usually framed in solid in mahogany, all with architectural elements specifically designed to complement your home and functional details that preserve the windows to last for generations. They have factory installation and service teams. The installation teams are factory employees, not subcontractors hired locally. You can purchase the finest product available, but if it's not installed correctly, it's still junk.
Scottpat Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 I would stay away from wood windows... Jim, gave you advice. Look for a glass company that does commercial store fronts.
Ohio Posted August 12, 2013 Author Report Posted August 12, 2013 All, Thanks. The original direct set windows in the wood framing lasted 23 yrs. Then, in 2008, a bad storm damaged the glass. We had a supposedly reputable window company replace the glass but have leaks. Found out that not only was the job poorly done, we got the wrong glass. So, if there are no manuals out there, we will look for a glazer who does store fronts.
