MPdesign Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 Large old cast iron steam tube boiler (1960s). It is not insulated - and there are two of them and they cause A LOT of heat. Can they be insulated or will it cause issues?
kurt Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Got a pic? Are the steam distribution pipes wrapped? All the old firetube boilers I look at are wrapped in asbestos.
MPdesign Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 The piping is insulated. The rear of the boiler is radiating a fair amount of heat. Click to Enlarge 45.54 KB
kurt Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Maybe, maybe not. I'd leave it up to the building engineer.
Bill Kibbel Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 It is quite likely that it has ceramic fiber or rock wool insulation blankets between the boiler shell and the jacket. If the surface temp is < 130F, it's insulated. The rear of the boiler is radiating a fair amount of heat. The rear of the boiler is a door to access the tubes. The door is lined with refractory cement that can fail and need replacement.
