Rob Amaral Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 File under "PV Panels/Deep Snow"/Sliding Off Roof" We got hit with about 20 " of snow here.. Uber-energy efficient house ('hot roof', the whole 9 yards) had PV panels and about 15' of snow on it.. Sun came out...today... air temp rose.. CARRUUUUUUUUUUmpF.. Hell of a pile of heavy wet snow landed in the back yard..
kurt Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Another example of how building codes don't keep up with our rapidly changing building technologies. Shoulda had snow brakes.
Jim Katen Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Something similar happened with the Citicorp tower in NYC in the late 70s. As I recall, it grabbed the headlines at the time.
Rob Amaral Posted March 11, 2013 Author Report Posted March 11, 2013 Amen.. if 5 ft tall skinny old granny was in the back yard, she could have been killed.. it was that much heavy, wet snow.. Eave was two stories up..I walked on the pile after it fell.. it was amazingly compacted solid from the inertia of the fall..
kurt Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 I got hit a few years back; it wasn't even that much snow sliding off an old slate roof. I heard it, looked, jumped to the side, the edge of the mass hit me, and flattened me. Taking a full hit would have broke me in half. And, that's exactly the sound. carrrumpfff.....
Tom Raymond Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 I'm heading out shortly to assess the damage done by a slide yesterday. Broken window, downed gutter, smashed deck and railing. Ah, Spring.
hausdok Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 I'm still trying to connect the title of this thread with the PV panel thingy. When I saw it I was sure we'd had a visit from some Chinese spammer and I was about to nuke it when I decided to see what item number whatzis was about. OT - OF!!! M.
Wasden Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 I worked commercial for thirty years and heard a story from Denver. Has anyone heard of the " Darth Vader" building? Same problem but off the top of a high-rise. Avalanche!
