randynavarro Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 Why would only this breaker be corroded and none others around it? It was off when I arrived. It's for the outdoor condenser/heat pump which I couldn't get to run by the way. . . Click to Enlarge 56.37?KB
Jerry Simon Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 Why would only this breaker be corroded and none others around it? Click to Enlarge 56.37?KB Because it's off? No current, no heat; cold lugs promoted condensation. ???
Marc Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 It looks like an older breaker than the two adjacent to it. Marc
Tom Raymond Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 There's 'stuff' on the wires above and below it, and on the top side of the tandem. Some contaminant hit the double pole breaker and splashed onto the surrounding areas?
Jim Katen Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 Why would only this breaker be corroded and none others around it? . . . It's suffering the ravages of a misspent youth. When it was younger it experimented with "dirty" power, associated with off-brand panels, and shared multi-wire circuits with others of the same pole. Now, it lives out its old age in decrepitude, a servant to a heat pump it loathes.
Scottpat Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 Mud dauber's nest remains, although I think Jim might have the real answer.....

Marc deserves a pat on the head as well.
hausdok Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 The AC system was probably added years after the home was built and that breaker spent most of it's time bouncing around in the back of the electrician's van before he pulled it out of his bucket of spare breakers and used it. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Rob Amaral Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 Mike's onto it.. Or, it may have been in a a previous panel at this location that got damaged from water and they saved this one... One of those two probably...
Richard Moore Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 I think the technical term is "Prodigal Breaker". One that once traveled elsewhere but has now returned to its home panel to retire.
randynavarro Posted March 6, 2013 Author Report Posted March 6, 2013 Sheesh. . . you guys are a lotta help . . .
John Dirks Jr Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Sparky dug it out of the bottom of his tool box and stuck it in there. Maybe a salvaged piece from another job?
