Mike Lamb Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 I believe there is an UST in the back yard at this property. To the best of my knowledge, IL does not have standards dealing with UST so I assume the federal guidelines apply: (b) To permanently close a tank, owners and operators must empty and clean it by removing all liquids and accumulated sludges. All tanks taken out of service permanently must also be either removed from the ground or filled with an inert solid material. so I'm recommending someone make sure this is or was done. Any comments? http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?c= ... .7&idno=40 Click to Enlarge 72.68?KB
Bill Kibbel Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 Sounds good, but... If there's no state requirement, individual municipalities might have their own abandoned UST ordinance. They might be more stringent than the fed guidelines. I always suggest they check with the local officials too.

I just Googled Chicago requirements and they pretty much mirror the EPA. http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/de ... tanks.html
John Kogel Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 In this area, the tank service contractor will search the property for free, and then if he finds one, makes a bundle making it safe to the current standards. It often involves removal and removal of the surrounding soil as well.
