John Dirks Jr Posted November 18, 2012 Report Posted November 18, 2012 I've not seen this done before. Why would a roofer add this extra layer of shingle detail at the rood to sidewall junction? Click to Enlarge 62.66 KB

Marc Posted November 18, 2012 Report Posted November 18, 2012 It'd leak on the first decent rainfall if it didn't. Marc
Bill Kibbel Posted November 18, 2012 Report Posted November 18, 2012 They added step flashings after discovering they were omitted when the roof cover was installed.
Jim Katen Posted November 18, 2012 Report Posted November 18, 2012 It'd leak on the first decent rainfall if it didn't. Marc I'm thinking that those *are* the step flashings.
John Dirks Jr Posted November 18, 2012 Author Report Posted November 18, 2012 Here's what I said. At two locations on the roof where roof slopes meet exterior sidewalls, there's an extra layer of shingles along the edge. This condition made it more difficult to check for proper step flashing without the possibility of causing damage. Since I'm not equipped to repair any damage that I might cause by checking for step flashings, I elected not to do it. There are some other roofing repairs that need to be done on this house. While the contractors are here for those roof repairs, have them check for proper step flashings at roof slopes to sidewall junctions and correct if needed.

John Kogel Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 There's a house with no step flashings down the road from here. I inspected it 2 years ago and called out the lack of flashings. Nothing has been done to the roof. Maybe they forgot. Maybe they'll forget me , too. []
