Use screws and drill into the siding. What you will actually attach to are the studs behind the siding. Add some silicone to the screw before you drill so that the silicone follows the screw. I am guessing about a 3" screw(s) should work.

Drill a small hole in line with a butt joint. The joints should fall on studs. Then enlarge the hole in the siding before putting the screw into the wood.

Hardie plank is quite brittle and will crack if you hit it hard.
