Mark P Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 My home owners insurance is paying for a new roof due to hail damage - which I'm very happy about since the roof is almost 20 years old anyway - yea me! The contractor doing the work says he typically uses GAF brand shingles, but would install whatever brand I want. I don't know if there is any significant difference between brands these days, but figured somone here would have an opinion.
Tom Raymond Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 GAF is decent but, if I had a choice I'd pick Certainteed.
Gadwall Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 I agree. GAF is a pretty good shingle, but I like Certainteed a little better.
kurt Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 Either is fine. imho, what goes in under the shingles is more important than the covering. I've even seen POS Iko's work just fine with the right substrates.
Chad Fabry Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 I like the four-bundles- to- a- square GAF. The Certainteed don't feel as 7heavy.
SNations Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 When clients ask me something like this I tell them that the person doing the installation is a lot more important than the brand. That's almost always true.

I wouldn't be as concerned with the brand as with the quality point within the brand. Several manufacturers are offering SBS modified shingles in their upper lines. I'd push for one of those.

Yeah, I was going to suggest the Malarkey Alaskan Shingles but I figured enough folks had already chimed in. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
