Mike Lamb Posted July 21, 2012 Report Posted July 21, 2012 Is there verse prohibiting a Cat IV PVC vent from being installed inside a clay chimney flue that is venting a Cat I water heater. Click to Enlarge 51.29 KB
Mike Lamb Posted July 21, 2012 Author Report Posted July 21, 2012 Might the heat from the water heater melt the plastic vent where they enter the chimney?
Jim Katen Posted July 21, 2012 Report Posted July 21, 2012 I don't have time to look up any verses tonight but I'd look at the reduction in cross-section at the chimney and the temperature rating of the plastic.
Mike Lamb Posted July 21, 2012 Author Report Posted July 21, 2012 That's OK. I have to get this report out now. The installation is questionable. The clay liner was broken about 30" below the crown so that's a problem right there.
hausdok Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 How about this one. M1801.4 Space Around Lining - The space surrounding a flue lining system or other vent installed within a masonry chimney shall not be used to vent any other appliance. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Douglas Hansen Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 I don't like that one Mike - Chapter 18 is basically about oil. Try this one from the chapter on gas-burning appliances: G2427.5.9 (503.5.10) Space surrounding lining or vent. The remaining space surrounding a chimney liner, gas vent, special gas vent, or plastic piping installed within a masonry chimney shall not be used to vent another appliance.
hausdok Posted July 22, 2012 Report Posted July 22, 2012 Hi Douglas, Yes, I hadn't thought of that and I think you nailed it with the part that says, "Or plastic piping installed within a masonry chimney." ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
