John Dirks Jr Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 I was taking the trash out and something flew out of what I though was an abandoned nest. I peeked into the nest and saw this. This is in addition to what flew by my head. What is it? Download Attachment: P1220251.JPG 1625.04 KB
Neal Lewis Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 John, my guess would be a house wren or Carolina wren.
Inspectorjoe Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 I have no idea what kind of bird it is, but I am intrigued by it. Didn't it too fly away when you got right up on to take the picture? Is it sitting on eggs? I'd have to guess that would be very unusual for Maryland. Last May and June, a pair of Cardinals hatched two eggs right outside my kitchen window. I managed to have the camcorder rolling the moment the first fledgeling left the nest. A nervous and proud dad kept close watch in the background. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php ... 4097388631
John Dirks Jr Posted January 26, 2012 Author Report Posted January 26, 2012 I dont know if the one in the nest is on eggs or not. Wouldn't it be unusual for it to lay eggs in January? Could the warm spell throw them off?
Bill Kibbel Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 It absolutely looks like a house wren. It's odd that they didn't migrate. It's also odd that the nest isn't in a cavity.

No, not in a cavity but at least under cover of the back porch. It's well shielded from the usual north westerly winds.

No, not in a cavity but at least under cover of the back porch. It's well shielded from the usual north westerly winds. Keeping the light on will also provide warmth.
hausdok Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 Are you certain it was alive and not frozen solid? OT - OF!!! M.

hausdok Posted January 27, 2012 Report Posted January 27, 2012 Guess he couldn't afford to winter in Florida this year. It is a tough economy right now. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
