Mike Lamb
Most of what I have researched shows perlite as a granule but I have seen some images fine as sugar. This stuff is as fine as flour. It was a couple inches thick in the attic beneath fiberglass batts everywhere I looked. 80+ year old house. Do you think it is perlite? Bill Kibbel
Perlite is manufactured in many grades. Some is as fine a powder as factory-made baking flour. The fine stuff is not common for thermal insulation in buildings. It's used for cryogenics and other industrial equipment insulation and filter media. It's also used as a filtering media, including clarifying some wines. Calcium carbonate is another fine white powder used for industrial insulation. It's commonly used for insulating in-ground steam piping systems.
pete moss
that does not look like typical perlite. It may be gypsum.
