Mike Lamb Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Does anyone have experience with painted tubs? Unless it looks like hatchet job, I remark that the tub (and sometimes the wall tiles) has been painted but I don't say much more than that.
Bain Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 I let them know that it's been glazed, 'cause it invariably chips and I don't want to hear about it a year down the road.
Rocon Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 I see a lot of fiberglass units that are coated. They look good for a while but they require maintenance coats. I would say in general you can expect 25% to have some chipping or peeling within 5 years. Of course this can vary based on use. My wife owns a dog grooming shop. The shop has a fiberglass tub shower enclosure. It requires a fresh coat every two years.
MMustola Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 We had the tub in the kids bathroom re glazed. I think that like most things the quality of the end result is in proportion to the time spent in preparation. The guy we hired spent about 4 hours sanding and prepping the tub. This was done about 5 years ago and it still looks great. Like most of you I have seen many tubs that were peeling. I always make a point of documenting the re-glazed tubs.
Chad Fabry Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 To be clear, they're not re-glazed, they're painted.
kurt Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 I see several that work great after several years. Cheap jobs chip around the drain first, then elsewhere. It's a decent budget alternative to ripping out a whole bathroom. I almost always note it's been painted.
MMustola Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 Chad, Of course you are right, they are painted. it's common in my area to refer to it as being 're-glazed'
