Any idea why the brick and mortar are darker on the left side of this chimney? Water penetration through the concrete cap at the top?

Tunnelvision. It's one of the hardest things to overcome in this job. I get it all the time. I have to remind myself, "Look up. Look down."

Hi Gary,

The wood framing adjacent to that side of the fireplace will be toast. Check the sill, band joist, etc. in the cellar. Also note the water stain at the right side (as viewed from the interior) on the firebox.

There had been repairs made to that area.
