Denray Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 Came across these photos of a "cabin in the woods" I looked at a few years back. Anyway this chimney could be safe? Click to Enlarge 59.75 KB Click to Enlarge 57.97 KB Click to Enlarge 49.86 KB
Ben H Posted July 21, 2011 Report Posted July 21, 2011 You think that mesh is supposed to be a heat shield? No, couldn't be....
gtblum Posted July 21, 2011 Report Posted July 21, 2011 I can touch my hand to the horizontal run on my stove pipe, with a blast furnace of a fire going in the stove. There should be another thimble and some rock over that run, but other than that, oh yeah, it's not by the book.
John Kogel Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 You think that mesh is supposed to be a heat shield? No, couldn't be.... No, that's where he puts his wet gloves to dry. Check it out on the right. It worked fine for the original owner because he knew what he had and kept it safe. But for a new owner, I would call it an amateur installation that needs to be repaired. I grew up with single-wall stove pipes and leaky brick chimneys, but we were smarter then. []
