Robert Jones Posted June 16, 2011 Report Posted June 16, 2011 Something just doesn't look right to me with the install in this valley. Am I wrong.? There was quite a bit of overlap, just have never seen the shingles at the valley exposed like this. Poor attempt at a weave? Click to Enlarge 90.67 KB Click to Enlarge 77.26 KB
Chad Fabry Posted June 16, 2011 Report Posted June 16, 2011 It's a poor attempt at a California valley. As you can see, it'll catch and hold debris.
ericwlewis Posted June 16, 2011 Report Posted June 16, 2011 maybe they just forgot to make the cut when they were done.
John Kogel Posted June 17, 2011 Report Posted June 17, 2011 You're not wrong, Robert. That valley is wrong. For a weave the shingles should go farther. It could now be turned into a cut valley, but only if there's enough overlap on the uncut side. Up here on new construction, the authorities want to see open metal valleys, not the valleys of sunny California. [] But the point is, the authorities don't have much faith in woven or cut valleys. They plug up with debris and moss and develop leaks.
Marc Posted June 17, 2011 Report Posted June 17, 2011 From the OP photo I cannot discern anything wrong with what I refer to as a woven valley. Marc
Jim Katen Posted June 17, 2011 Report Posted June 17, 2011 From the OP photo I cannot discern anything wrong with what I refer to as a woven valley. Marc Look again. It's not woven. One side goes under, the other side goes over. It's a closed cut valley where the installer forgot to trim the cut side.
Brandon Whitmore Posted June 17, 2011 Report Posted June 17, 2011 It's a closed cut valley where the installer forgot to trim the cut side. That's what it looks like from my seat. Robert, did you measure the distance between the valley center line and shingle joints in the underlying courses to see if they ran up the other side far enough?
Robert Jones Posted June 17, 2011 Author Report Posted June 17, 2011 Thanks guys. Brandon, I did not measure. This valley just caught my eye as the other valley's were "normal" looking.
Brandon Whitmore Posted June 17, 2011 Report Posted June 17, 2011 This valley just caught my eye as the other valley's were "normal" looking. In that case, there's a better than average chance that the roofer just forgot to cut this last valley.
