Jim Katen Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 During the inspection, I referred to them as the "stone-clad objects in the backyard." In the report, I referred to them as "boxes." Do these articles have a formal name? Do they deserve one? Download Attachment: StoneCladObjects.JPG 133.86 KB
John Kogel Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 If that porch was a bridge, I'd say they were Troll guard houses. They would be more attractive with gnomes or bulldog figurines in them, ya think?
David Meiland Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 There was a plan there, once... storing firewood? installing some kind of art in those niches?
kurt Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 Stone clad wood boxes works for me. How about "idiotic stone clad boxes"?
Jim Katen Posted June 4, 2011 Author Report Posted June 4, 2011 Stone clad wood boxes works for me. How about "idiotic stone clad boxes"? Too obvious. I prefer the understated. Framed with PT 2x4s, sheathed in untreated plywood, sitting on grade. Backerboard on top of the plywood, stone slapped on the backerboard. No flashing, no details. Leaking, rotting, silly.
Bain Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 I would have probably gone with something lazy like "decorative newel posts."
Richard Moore Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 If this was the 70's I would expect to find speaker wire inside! But...talking of the 70's, whoever added those on top and around the existing deck had to be smoking something. I particularly like the slab "balanced" on top of the left post. What to call them? Crap That Needs Removing?
hausdok Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 They look like chairs for a couple of those jackel-headed men that the pharoahs used to guard their tombs. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Jim Baird Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 My guess is the designer maight have made them to contain some kind of lighting with a translucent panel of some kind in front? I found a brick-clad chimbley column like these that was stuck onto the outside wall of a dwelling addition, inside was a faux-stone hearth-like thing, but the woodstove planned for it was never installed. Seemed domestic discord truncated the project and left the house unoccupied.
Rob Amaral Posted June 7, 2011 Report Posted June 7, 2011 masonry-clad storage units.. (official) "Stupid little boxes on the back deck" (Unofficial)
mgbinspect Posted June 7, 2011 Report Posted June 7, 2011 My guess is the designer might have made them to contain some kind of lighting with a translucent panel of some kind in front? That would have been my guess as well. Odd...
