Richard Moore Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I'm going to go with "Whole House Nutmeg Grater"...but then, I'm odd! [:-spin]
hausdok Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Kinda looks like the bottom end of a thingy we found in our barn when I was a kid. My dad said it was for making corn meal. It suppose it could be a clothes wringer though. and that white stuff is soap residue that built up on the side of the thing. I can imagine some poor lady sitting there scrubbing stuff on a washboard and then feeding it up through that thing to somewhere else. Oh! How about a mop wringer? ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
hausdok Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Noodle maker for making homemade pasta. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Steven Hockstein Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 A secret floor safe. The slot at the top is hidden in the floor boards. The bottom of the box has been removed in your photo and all cash has been removed. Jim- this message will self destruct in 30 seconds. For affect, sing this out loud now "dun dun da di, dun dun da dum, dun dun da di, dun dun da dum.....

ericwlewis Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 it's to remove sand from your shoes or feet when you come in!
Chad Fabry Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Has it always been attached to the basement ceiling? Is the basement ceiling like 80 feet above sea level?
Bill Kibbel Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 It's an old beacon light re-purposed as a grow light.
Richard Saunders Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 Radio antenna insulator (what's it doing in the basement?) Considering the clues, I'd say it's an old mast light.
Erby Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 I'm just blind. I see NO long cylindrical object made of glass in that photo. WHERE!
