ericwlewis Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 I was in a loyal remodeling customers attic running TV cable when I came across this. Click to Enlarge 28.3 KB I immediately shut it down and repaired it.
Marc Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 In repairing it, where you able to determine just what type of failure had caused it? Marc
John Kogel Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Wow, good catch. Do you think somebody stepped on it there?
Jim Katen Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Ah yes, the old hot-wire-touching-the-sheath-of-BX-cable-that-lacks-a-bonding-strip trick.
ericwlewis Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 Ah yes, the old hot-wire-touching-the-sheath-of-BX-cable-that-lacks-a-bonding-strip trick. BINGBINGBING! The clamp was loose and wouldn't tighten. The clamp has probably been loose for many years and stepped on dozens of times causing the deterioration of the insulation. Hot touches bx casing....... I had to remove 6" of bx casing to get good insulation on the conductors. Fortunately there was enough slack to do so. I then installed a new clamp that actually tightened all the way. "Fired" it back up!
Jim Katen Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Could you shoot me a high res version of that pic? I promise to attribute it to you if I use it in a presentation. Jim Katen jim@benchmarkinspections.com
