Darren Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Check out this beauty and the size of the TPR. Anyway, the water heater cold water supply is connected to a pipe that exits the Taco multi coil valve? Has anyone ever seen this before? Bill Kibbel Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 I've found very similar looking devices on commercial and some large residential boilers. They were heat exchangers for live steam to pre-heat the boiler feed water. I've inspected several large industrial steam boilers used for process equipment that have separate boilers to pre-heat the feed water.
Darren Posted March 5, 2011 Author Report Posted March 5, 2011 Bill, Looking at the photos, what do you think the material is that they wrapped the boiler with (I'm supposed to get the paperwork from the owner). The reason I'm asking is they also wrapped the 'vent connector' with it. Click to Enlarge 41.38 KB
Neal Lewis Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Could that also be called a sidearm water heater? Darren, where was that house?
Darren Posted March 5, 2011 Author Report Posted March 5, 2011 Summit, near the hospital. 12 bedrooms (including the 3 servants bedrooms) 7 baths, 11 fireplaces. Clay tile roof. This beauty must have been the toast of the town way back when. The realtor said she has the listing from when it was sold back in 1950 (stated 'recent total renovation'). Pre-listing inspection.

Bill Kibbel Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Could that also be called a sidearm water heater? True "Side-arm" water heaters aren't connected to house heating boilers. I've always seen heat exchangers for domestic hot water on steam boilers that look like this: Click to Enlarge 23.63 KB
AHI in AR Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Am I the only one that thought "crematorium" when seeing that thing?
Darren Posted March 6, 2011 Author Report Posted March 6, 2011 Am I the only one that thought "crematorium" when seeing that thing? No evidence of body parts inside. Click to Enlarge 58.41 KB Bill, I'm going back tomorrow for the radon; I'll check it out and the owners son is supposed to have some info for me.
