What is it? Looks similar to the sensor on a thermal expansion valve Is there a TXV inside the evaporator coil housing? If so, I assume it should be in contact with the suction line?

Your correct in your assumptions.

If the unit has been running with powerhead sensor off the suction line there a really good chance the compressor has taken a few slugs of liquid.

I would think that it should have been installed in the cabinet as well. Looks like the cap line is pinched where it exits the cabinet.
