exploreparadise2 Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 An unusual encounter in this 1970s commercial building were the clear glass drain pipes and vent stacks. They were installed in lab sinks. The building engineer said the glass was quite durable but good luck finding a plumber that can work with glass. Click to Enlarge 35.45 KB
Tom Raymond Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 That's not at all what I expected to see given the name of the thread[:-dev3] Forget finding a plumber that can work with it, where does one go for replacement parts?
Bain Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 I wonder how much glass gets broken while one learns just how tightly to twist the nuts on the little Fernco-ish couplings?
Darren Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 Does anyone REALLY want to see 'crap' flowing through the pipes?
Terence McCann Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 The company I use to work with had Tremco as one of their accounts. We designed a lab hood exhaust and make-up air system for the lab. All the lab sinks had glass drain piping due to the caustic nature of the liquids they were working with. Proceed With Caution - it may bite. Glass Drain & Vent Piping
Bill Kibbel Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 We've inspected quite a few R&D labs for pharmaceutical, petroleum product and chemical companies. The clear drains have occasionally been some type of special acrylic. The glass pipes are still available - I think the brand is Kimax.

plummen Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 its common around here in hospital labs where lots of acidic chemicals make there way into drains. its easy to work with, you just need to heat the area before you snapping it off
nookandcranny Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I took some classes at a community college held in a classroom below such a lab. The crap in the pipes was green! It was kinda creepy to see mazes of it above your head...
