Is there any prohibition against installing laminate strip shingles on a vertical surface?

No there is not, however the issue they have is the tabs will not seal together. I have a project in Venice, CA installed in 2000 with no issues at all.

We put them on dormer walls around here. They'll last forever.

They typically require hand sealing, and additional nails (such as for high wind areas).

If you want to see pictures of what a wall/ roof? like that looks like when not fastened or sealed properly, let me know...

They wrap chimneys around here with them when the roof covering is replaced. About that time the veneer on the chimneys is pretty much worn as well.

As KM noted ... they last forever.
