Bill Kibbel Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 This duct insulation looks just like the old asbestos Air-Cell and Asbestocel, commonly found on old steam piping systems and coal furnace ducts. This was probably installed when central forced-air heating was installed in this home in 1975. It is on 6" ducts. Click to Enlarge 30.15 KB How late was asbestos duct insulation available? Could they have manufactured this type of insulation without asbestos felts?
hausdok Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Hi Bill, Well, they didn't ban asbestos until about 1978 and then the ban was lifted somewhere around 1982 so it could certainly have asbestos in it if it's in a 1975 structure. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Les Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Hey Bill, Asbestos pipe insulation was readily available for commercial stuff in Michigan until abt 1992 and then was still available, just hard to get.
Bill Kibbel Posted November 6, 2010 Author Report Posted November 6, 2010 Thanks Mike & Les. Anyone know of anything I can reference showing this corrugated layer stuff was still manufactured with asbestos this late?
hausdok Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 Hi Bill, It's just a shot in the dark; but try http://www.asbestoscatalogs.com/ ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Bill Kibbel Posted November 6, 2010 Author Report Posted November 6, 2010 Great link, Mike. They have a 1952 catalog cover showing the Asbestocel duct insulation. It shows a poor fellow cutting it with a handsaw!
