Bill Kibbel Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 I'm trying to figure how to seal the tree penetration through the roof of the tree house I'm building. Kurt, can you remember the details--is that just a bunch of goop sealing the roof deck to the trunk? Did they allow room for growth of the trunk and if so, how much? The best flashing for tree trunk-thru-roof joints is made from tire inner tubes. They're available for many diameters - from lawn tractor to earth mover tires.
mgbinspect Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 I had been kicking around, in my head, some form of unique custom flashing / counter-flashing designed to accommodate growth.
kurt Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 No flashing.....it was just gooped up with roofing cement.

John Dirks Jr Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 My favorite Kurt-ism is "I walk in wondering what I'm going to find and I leave wondering what I missed." That is good. I dont remember seeing it before so thanks for mentioning it again.

Is this from personal experience? Inspecting, not installing. I've seen a handful of additions to old buildings constructed around tree trunks. The 2 that leaked the least had tire inner tubes fabricated into collars.
kurt Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 I could see how that could work. It's like a kayaker's gasket apron. Personally, I think that live trees and habitable structures should be separate and distinct entities. Although, Wharton Esherick did some fine work in his home with tree trunk stairs.

I can see how the trees would agree with you. Imagine us humans hanging out with corpses. [:-crazy] Marc
robert1966 Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 I have never seen the light pole or tree before, I have seen a fire hydrant sitting in the right half of a drive way before restricking the driveway to only 11 feet wide a the street.
