Terence McCann Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 How many feet of gutter is permissible before a downspout is needed?
Robert Jones Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 Terry, I know there are all kinds of different ways to determine the amount of gutter(s), but, I have always thought that it was/is 1 2x3 downspout for every 30 ft of gutter.
Jerry Simon Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 I ain't got a clue, but I'm sure how much roof surface the gutter handles comes into play. I call it like courts call porn; I'm not sure what it is, but I know (it's wrong) when I see it.
kurt Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 I'm not aware of any requirement. I know that I call out a lot of gutters and downspouts that are too small nowadays. Like Jerry said, it depends on the roof size and design.
Mike Lamb Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 Jerry equates the downspout answer to porn (I'm pretty sure Alcoa does too) and Kurt calls it out a lot when it is too small. Hmmm. Since I am an expert from the gutter, I can answer equivocally, there should be at least one downspout per length of gutter.
hausdok Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 There are lots of theories about that; here are a few. Review the articles, pick out a method you like and then come back here and teach it to the rest of us. ONE TEAM -ONE FIGHT!!! John Dirks Jr Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 I like it when I see that 30' section of gutter from the main roof on a colonial drain onto the garage roof and then dump into the garages 15' section of gutter before being fed out one downspout. Then, the downspout dumps it onto negative grade that wraps around the back of the house and up against the foundation. And people wonder why they have a musty basement and an active sump pump.
