Marc Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 "Example: PRESENT TENSE: The garage door is one of the largest moving objects in a home. Improperly installed "safety eyes" of the garage door is a main cause of property damage or bodily injury. Testing and monitoring the garage door operating is an important task related home maintenance." How many grammatical errors can you find in the above example from Mike's link? I'm not so sure this dude should give instruction when it comes to writing. "Safety eyes?" Am I pedantic 'cause I call them photo-electric safety sensors? Two grammatical errors. Someone should spank him.[] Marc
hausdok Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Hi, Well, I didn't mean to hijack Kimball's thread; my point is simply that as long as there are folks out there who are using passive language and others perceive them as being good writers, simply because of their position in an organization or because they are writing for a newspaper someplace, there is always going to be this problem. We should make a pointed effort to correct these vaunted fellows when we see them using passive language. I'm talking about doing it every time you see someone post a passive language comment; whether it be Barry Stone, Ben Gromicko, Mike O'Handley, Mike Casey, etc.. Don't let us get away with it without saying something about it and don't be shy about it just because you think you'll be perceived as being a prig. If we can write things that we expect you to listen to, than we must be willing to listen in return. I think it's time to split this topic into one about the fireplace and a separate one about writing; no? ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Hearthman Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 Appear to be unlisted ventfree gas logs installed into a bedroom fireplace that has been modified with an unidentifiable material. Recommend NFPA 211 Level II inspection by a F.I.R.E. Certified Inspector and consultation by National Fireplace Institute Certified Gas Hearth Appliance Specialist. Do Not use this appliance until inspected and cleared for use by specialist. If this appliance is not listed to ANSI Z21.11.2 as an unvented room heater by a recognized testing lab AND is not approved for bedroom use or has an input firing rate greater than 10,000 BTU/hr. or does not have an Oxygen Depletion Sensor, it should be removed. Ventfree gas logs are approved for use only in masonry fireplaces constructed to one of the model building codes. Enclosing a fireplace as this one is, is not recognized in the codes so it should be shutdown and either repaired to the current code or permanently closed up. FYI, first ventfree listing was 1972.
kurt Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 Just curious, but why wouldn't you just say it's junk and ditch it? You can see if it's listed; there'd be a listing plate. Why call in a specialist for something that's clearly a piece of crap? It just sounds like an overly complicated explanation for something that's junk.....(?)....
