Darren Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 One of last weeks inspections turned up another first (actually two firsts on one subject). The house had a hot water boiler installed in the attic. During the exterior inspection, I reviewed the above ground propane tanks. During the attic inspection, I found the boiler in the attic. During this review, the spec plate mounted on the boiler showed it to be a natural gas; no sticker was found that stated the unit was converted to LP. Now, when I removed the access cover to the burner, here was another spec plate which stated the unit was manufactured for LP. Since access was limited, a complete review was impossible. I told them what I found and I couldn't confirm the age or if the burner was set-up for LP. Oh, check out the ANSI dates on each plate! Click to Enlarge 60.52 KB Click to Enlarge 57.8 KB
kurt Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Look up a recall by Utica......I seem to remember something about a Utica boiler recall several years ago. After that, it's not hard to convert a burner to LP; I think it's just an orifice change.
Bill Kibbel Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 If you can get to it, you can quickly determine if it's NOT converted for LP by looking at the flames. The gas control valve should be labeled as well.
