Erby Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Other than common sense (energy efficiency), is there anything to prohibit a hollow core interior door between the house and the attic. Click to Enlarge 46.05 KB FYI, it's on the far side of the house from the garage so the fire rated separation from the garage doesn't count. -
mgbinspect Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 I wish I didn't see this setup almost every day. But, recently I've seen three builders actually use a metal insulated entry door to the attic, which is encouraging. I always recommend that folks weatherstrip and insulate hollow core attic doors.
Charlie R Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Nothing but the energy concerns as far as I know.
Brandon Whitmore Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 I've heard it argued that the attic door/ opening must be insulated to the required R value of the walls adjacent.
aaronm Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 There are also the concerns of the door manufacturer's installation instructions. Many door makers stipulate that interior grade hollow-core doors be installed only in interior partition separation applications. Exterior installations of these doors can lead to delamination and deterioration above and beyond the insulation issues.
Brandon Whitmore Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 Exterior installations of these doors can lead to delamination and deterioration above and beyond the insulation issues. Has anyone ever seen a hollow core door fall apart when used as an interior attic access door?
robert1966 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Say here, just wish the builders would install a fire rated insulated or solid door like the one for the garage.
Ben H Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Exterior installations of these doors can lead to delamination and deterioration above and beyond the insulation issues. Has anyone ever seen a hollow core door fall apart when used as an interior attic access door? No, but I've seen a few houses in the hood have them as exterior back doors...[:-bonc01]
