Deranged or drained? Were there mushrooms in the crawl? I've never seen anything like that in my pictures.

The upper third of the image reminds me of bark mulch.

I have no idea about the rest.

The lower part of the image resembles the view into the open end of a pipe. The black line suggests that the 'pipe' is level.

The outer material looks like OSB that has rotted out.

It's a jazzed view of a chimney flue from the clean-out. The water heater vent is jammed in there pretty good.

What made you look in there Mike? Water heater not venting correctly?

I always look up the clean-outs with a mirror and a flashlight if I can. This chimney had a newer 80% AFUE furnace and should have gotten a new liner installed anyway.

I'm sorry to say I don't but that is about to change.

I figure that about the time I'm ready to check out I'll have it all down pat.
