I agree with your assessment. The issue is it's difficult to determine during the inspection what was (if anything) approved by the local authority. The ESA stickers are some indication, but they're rarely filled out and I have no way of confirming them. In general I don't pay to much attention to what the local authorities approved or not because of this. In this case there were openings in the side and cover of the panel which needed to be filled as well. So I asked for it to be corrected and informed them that they may need to switch the box.

I just spoke to an local electrician and he said the building code requires a CSA approved junction box. So by the building code it most likely wouldn't be accepted. He also added the arrangement was somewhat common.

I was recently inspecting a 1950's bungalow that had a new Distribution panel installed in the utility room. They used the old distribution panel as a junction box to tie the new wiring to the old. The breakers were removed and the service wire went directly to the new box. Does a distribution panel make a legal junction box?

I own two Fenix lights. The TK45 for attics and other areas that need a large amount of illumination and a LD20 for everything else. Both of these lights are solid and very bright. They both use AA batteries which is good because AA's are cheap at Costco ($12 for 44) and are available everywhere in a pinch. I'm thinking of getting a headlamp for those moments when I need my hands free. Is everyone else using headlamps? Any recommendations?

What Type of Reporting Method Do You Use?

I've been using the Horizon package from Carlson Dunlop for about 3 months. It allows me to prepare the report on site and print a short summary before I leave. Then later that night I add the pictures and more detailed content. The system automatically generates the PDF, sends an email to the client with a link to the report on their servers. I think it generates the best reports by far. Another nifty feature is reporting templates. If I know I'm going to a 8 year old house, I pull up that template and the report is 50% done when I arrive. If I run into something that is unusual for a home of that age I can change it quickly. Hello, I came across this today and I'm not a 100% sure what it is. It looks a little like a cold pour but there is brown paper coming out of the edges of the joints between the two different colored surfaces. The concrete was fine and felt solid.
