  1. I found this very odd. The lower wall on this hundred plus-year-old house was wood studs. But brick was installed about 6 foot above the foundation. Has anyone seen this before? There were other houses in the neighborhood just like this one with the fake stone in front but the masonry walls extend all the way down to the foundation. ??
  2. The cheapies are only good for radiant heat and the client thinks I'm cool to have thermal imaging. A plus is when scanning old upright cast iron radiators I can see if they are mostly filled with air and need to be bled.
  3. What do you call the middle metal blades at the back of the panel that the circuit breakers snap onto? Anyway, the breakers are now sticking out a little like a "V" down the middle, so the front is not as snug as it should be.
  4. Would sealing the exterior of the limestone blocks slow deterioration? Or would block replacement be the best remedy?
  5. What would you say, if anything, about GE breakers in a Square D panel? The breakers stick out 1/2 inch at the middle contacts, but other than that I saw no other problems. 20-year-old panel.
  6. You can check your State EPA. Last time I checked in IL, the residential occupant doesn't have to do anything unless they know there is a leak. However, definitely report that it might be an oil tank and it needs to be checked out by an oil guy. They can fish a stick down it and see what's what. A buyer might want it removed.
  7. I assume it's to push water towards the valley.
  8. I'm getting the feeling it's LP and not Hardie plank. 🐑
  9. Here are some other images. And yes, I did notice that the Z flashing has been improperly caulked.
  10. I'm pretty sure it is cement board and not LP. I did not think put a knife into it to check. I use Hardie Specs for installation If I think it is cement board. Might this be Certainteed cement board? Tom might be right. I suppose it could be LP.
  11. Well, hopefully the caulk is not a replacement for the butt flashing behind the siding. Water will get behind siding somehow regardless. Hardie does recommend caulking next to window/door trim etc. So caulking failure is inevitable. Jerry may be more spot on as far as a cosmetic concern.
  12. Hardie board does not recommend caulking between siding butt joints. Why?
  13. Is anyone using the FLIR ONE Gen 3 for iPhones? I have an old FLIR 1 I bought around four or five years ago? And it will not hold a battery charge. As a matter of fact, the battery was always a problem. I am not a thermographer. I only use it for jobs that have radiant heat. The one I'm looking at is about $200 so the price is right. Resolution 1440 X 1080. https://www.flir.com/products/flir-one-gen-3/
  14. How about something like, "This product is not supposed to be used this way and I cannot predict if this will cause future problems. The seller should provide documentation from a qualified source that the use of this product, as used, will not be a future structural concern." I would also include the Hardie references in the report.
  15. From HardiePlank installation instructions: • HardiePlank lap siding may be installed on flat vertical wall applications only. I would remark in the report that this product is not supposed to be used this way and you cannot predict if this will cause future problems.
  16. I thought there was a code reference that occupants should have access to their main electric disconnects if there is not 24 hr. management? I can't locate that.
  17. It is too cold to run AC around here. Would the corrosion at the suction line connection at the furnace air handler be indicative of a refrigerant leak?
  18. A PVC radon venting pipe coming out of the floor in a crawlspace has a sound like water running or trickling in it. Is this an important concern?
  19. Sister Verona's Hot Sauce can be purchased - so far - at four Chicagoland locations. But if you're not in the neighborhood we can work something out. I will message you.
  20. Thanks.
  21. I use Facebook and Instagram to promote my various adventures – home inspections, my fledgling hot sauce business, my artwork, an occasional nice picture of my family. I don't engage. I promote in a vanilla non-offensive way. I think social media should be pretty much for cute animal pictures and pictures of awesome food. I love seeing great pictures of unhealthy food. And that's about it.
  22. I have never investigated what lead tastes like until now. I read that lead has a salty and sugary taste which is unusual for poison. Rodents love salt and sugar. I know mice and chipmunks are very fond of copper wire. I have never tasted copper or lead personally. The parents wouldn't let me.
  23. Like me. My grasp of electricity is not the greatest. Many questions here. So the tied breakers in question are sharing the same neutral? And if one breaker trips you want both to trip so the neutral cannot be overloaded? And the ties should not be removed? And tying the two breakers together with something other than electrical wire should be done? I also had to look up the acronym MWC. Minor Work Certificate? That would mean someone other than a licensed electrician did the work?
