Not sure I agree with that. Some years ago I got a call from my mother who lives in Florida. She'd moved down there and had bought a manufactured home in one of those retirement communities. She said that her roof was leaking. I arranged for my younger brother and I to converge on her home and flew down there. The roof was metal and had some kind of silver elastomeric coating on it and bituthine seam sealant that was failing everywhere. It was hotter than hell at midday in that home, even with the AC on. We stripped all of the sealant tape off, used an aircraft paint stripper to remove every bit of decades of paints and such from that roof and then we rolled down new vinyl-faced bituthene seam sealer and then coated the entire roof with a fresh white coat of acrylic sealant. The day after we finished, the inside of that home was cool and comfortable with the AC on at midday because most of that heat was being reflected. She saw a significant drop in her electric bill after that because her AC wasn't running continuously. Total cost of materials was about $300. We put about 10 hours labor into it. It's paid for itself ten times over in the past five years. Obviously, reflecting sunlight to reduce solar gain has certain advantages in some climates. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike Hi Mike. We have used different kinds of heat resistant roofing paint also (the manufacturers call it 'membrane') and we found it to be very efective. The makers belive it to lower roof space temp by up to 12 degrees. With our tests however, i say more like 3 - 4 degrees. Still, every degree is worth it i suppose if other forms of cooling fail or you are trying to implement a green tactic. Just dont know if the cost justifies the exercise. There has been some pretty in depth studies here that draw conclusions to suggest the idea is worth it. But still nothing major happening. Was wondering if anyone with a large warehouse or factory has tried this (cool roofs) and whther it has made a difference or not.

Guys a question someone asked me the other day. There are not many roofing questions that i cant really answer but this is one of them. Q: "What is the best way to attach a skillion roof to an existing roof/gutterline that is fuly lined that is waterproofed at the join? This is a colourbond roof with steel fascia and guttering with steel trusses at 26 degrees" Tough one. Phil
-
Wow. That is an impressive roof pic! Would you mind if i put that pic on my website Robert? Cheers, Phil
-
I think that fascia board needs replacing!! [] Do you guys still use Oregon timber in US? We would replace that with 230mm treated pine.
-
Hi guys. Here in Australia we havent realy adopted the same green roof ideas that the US seem to be doing. I have noticed that many companys are painting roofs white, which has been endorsed by the goverment. Is this correct? If so, does does the carbon offset or energy saving really make enough of a difference to warrant the inittial costing of the roof paint? There have been a few programs here that have tried to get off the ground by lacked incentive for the government to back the ideas. Any thoughts?

Hi Robert. We also come accross this kind of roof leak all the time. Personally, it is the worst roof repairs for us to try and diagnose. Many times i have found it to be waterproofing tape around the window being incorrectly installed or not there at all. I am not too sure what you guys call this though. Other times, it has been a leak running down the inside of the wall of a double story onto the bottom story window area. I do hate this leak area though! Phil

Yeah us assies are'nt very articulate! [:-graduat [:-thumbu]

Thanks mike. I will check out those links. Thanks for the info. Apparantly, her son is a builder and did the whole thing. Obviously he stuffed up and so did the shingler. Cheers. Phil

I ment to say that the roof has NOT got a steep enough pitch to allow for proper water run off. Your right though, a "prestigious" building should be repaired properly. The building is about 92 squares. Took 3 months to lay shingles with quite an expense. I suppose there is no other way. Big design fault. cheers,

Hi guys, what I have is problem. I need to waterproof a west red cedar shingled roof that is quite new in construction. The problem is, when the roof was constructed, it was not built at a steep enough pitch and now the roof is constantly taking in water through the shingles. The owners want a solution that will allow them to; A. Keep their roof and not have to replace. B. Have a clear coloured membrane or waterproofing agent applied so that they keep their cedar colour scheme. The building is very prestigious and the area is very large and so a thorough solution is needed. Is there a membrane can be applied? Your thoughts and hints would be appreciated. Here is pic to get an idea of pitch. I hope it worked. Download Attachment: shingle roof pitch.gif 470 Bytes

Thanks for the quick reply and the real estate tip!

Hi there. I was wondering whether you guys as HI's personally reccomend / refer other trade companies to client to complete necessary works after an expection. What wondering as a roofing contractor, if it would be worth talking to some HI's in my area. Cheers guys, Phil

Haha. Quite funny Jim!!

Here in Melbourne we just had probably the worst insurance natural disaster payout ever. It was hail storm damage in the size range of bass balls also. We are still repairing roofs 4 months later. Many roof roofs have been totally replaced by us as an insurance repair. Clay tiles of over 50 years old have been the worst hit roofs. These tiles shatter and although we and insurance are awAre that the tiles are weak, they are replaced anyway. Back to your problem, I think it would be safe to assume that cracked cement tiles can be located straight away via a thorough roof inspection. Good luck.

Hi mike. We only really have eave vents. We fit whirley birds for extra ventilation. I suppose roof tiles naturally ventilate. Phil
-
Thanks Mike. I dont know why we dont use them here. They sound practical. There is one or two company's but they are not very popular at all. Phil
-
Hey guys, does anyone know if shingles are hard to walk on (slippery) when they are wet? I realize ice would be slippery. We don't use shingles in Australia. Phil
-
That is a terrible looking vent.

I would have thought all roofing structures would need to have guttering installed. That is the case in Victoria, Aust. Phil
-
Do you know how that origional asphalt material was applied? Definatley does not look like a finishing system.
-
Do you have the shortened version available?? My brain stopped working after the 8th paragraph!

I love a roof without gutters. Gives it such a natural feel. Just look out for the water fall when going in your front door during a rain storm!!

Hi richard, Yeah, im talking about tiled and metal roofs. The older areas here are mainly terracotta tiles and old galvanised tin. The newer built areas would be more commonly cement tiled roofs. Colorbond is starting to become fairly common in all areas though.
-
Hi guys, i know this is on old post however the tiles you are talking about are made by an Australian company. Monier have the main concrete tile manufactoring plant here. The cracks you speak of are called 'broken noses'. This occurs during transport and during installation. Sometimes the tiles can be a little odd shapped due to maintainance being required for machines and cause problems where the 'noses' break a lot easier with downwards pressure put on these weaker spots. This chips will not cause any leaks. Other areas of concern for these tiles are broken 'water courses'. These are chips tiles right down the bottom on the other side of the tile in the water drainage channel. this will cause leaks and is very common with weak tiles. cheers, Phil
