I came from a family of mechanics but chose to work in electrical because good mechanics use their ears to diagnose and mine didn't work.  Years later, after 7 yrs of schooling, first in Radio/TV repair then in electrical engineering, I realized that prejudice against the deaf would forever deny me a professional career in electrical, so I wandered the trades for most of my life until a surgically-installed bionic device restored enough of my hearing that I could barely communicate with folks in a quiet retail setting.  In 2003, I started my own business as an HI, combining all that I knew, and I've loved it ever since.
