  1. A community north of me does not allow trash cans to be visible from the street. On trash day a city worker drives a John Deere Gator up the driveway, to the rear of each house, and picks up the trash. Their taxes reflect that kind of services.
  2. You could have your clients check with the National Park Service, they have a training center in Frederick, Maryland for the people that work on old structures. Or, have them look up PTN (Preservation Trades Network). Their members are always looking for some old wood.
  3. Are we asking about HUD Fee Inspections or 203(K) Consultant? I do Fee Inspections and I charge based on the average time it takes to look at upgrades completed and to fill out the report. From start to finish I usually have about 2 hours invested.
  4. Erby, Can I copy the picture to show my clients what may be happening under their "No Maintenance, Lifetime Guaranteed" Plastic Palace? Do you know how old the house is?
  5. John, Next time Bill Kibbel teaches a class on Inspecting old houses, you need to attend. Or read everything he has written on the "Old House Web". When things, like you posted, come up on my Inspections and I don't want to write a long explanation in the Inspection Report, I direct the reader to Bill's site (I know it is not his site, but he seems to have the most articles posted). TIJ should put together a 2 day class on wall systems with Bill leading the Experts in teaching the great unwashed. Chicago would be a good location , Kurt could host it and suggest the best places to eat.
  6. Could it be that the 2X8's were used as forms for a concrete floor?
  7. Mark, Don't worry about the asbestos you inhaled on that attic inspection, it will probably take 15 to 20 years before it starts eating into you lungs.
  8. Kurt, no Terra Cotta in Chicago?
  9. I agree with Kurt on the fix, make the deck self-supporting. Get a deck contractor to help you, then remove only enough siding to fix what rot there is.
  10. Living in the basement, verses living one floor up, I would think you would want that number to be as close to zero as possible. Ohio is a regulated state and I have to have 16 hours of CE every two years to be a tester. Listing to the Scientist talk about the relationship to time of exposure at different levels, they seem to tell us that no level is safe if exposed to it for a long time.
  11. It looks to me that those piers are supporting I joists, not beams. Could they have been added later because of bounce in the floor or improperly cut I joists?
  12. Thanks Bill, this ought to keep me busy for at least a couple of years!
  13. You can tell who the rich Inspectors are, they wear the gold rings![]
  14. Someone took a nice little cape and put a box truck over the rec room and part of the garage. The closet by the front door is now a set of steps to the box, which makes it about 2 feet wide and real steep. Somehow I think this one got done without pulling a permit. 15. Can they not build a platform in the finished area to allow for the proper entry and exit with the door hung that way it is now?
  16. I have not seen that setup in Splits in my area (Northeast Ohio).
  17. JK is in fine form tonight.
  18. Being someone who leans to the right, this john would't work for me.
  19. The guy knew what he was doing; covering up all the crap so he could flip the house. Is there a book being sold to these flippers showing how to make it look pretty to sell quickly? I just came back from setting a Radon at a flipper that I will inspect on Saturday and found a new steel door with a big window installed between the garage and house. Looks like it will be a long Report this weekend.
  20. Erby, What, you got something against recycling?
  21. Yea, but everything is painted up real nice!
  22. Sure it's a Hazard, that doll could topple over and hit you in the head while you are tickling the keys. If it was in CA it would require a couple straps around it.
  23. That is some nice looking baseboard, and then someone covered the floor with plywood.
  24. Jim Katen wrote; "Not at all. A fair amount of evidence shows that exposure to low levels of radioactivity is beneficial. The thought is that it stimulates the body's repair mechanisms. I suppose it's analogous to exposure to bacteria, viruses, and certain parasites." So hanging with a few agents is not bad, it's when you get in a swarm of them that hurts.
