  1. I've inspected many dormitories and off-campus apartment buildings (we just got a request for another 30). More often than not, it's the girl's areas that are perpetual disasters. It can get bad for the boys, but then they have a major party and clean everything up. Ditto that. I have a friend that won't rent to single women because they are more abusive to his property than single men. He told me about some of the things that were fished out of the drains and I gagged at the descriptions! Me, too. Working on a punch list in a brand new college sports facility, years ago. (Hockey) Went into the men's locker room and everything was in its place. Later, in the women's locker room, the entire floor was covered with smelly, equipment and clothes. I don't know how they knew who owned what. Talk about pungent!
  2. First of all, we don't caulk much of anything except where a countertop meets a wall. That's painter's work. No, they don't hire scabs. The hall sends guys that aren't working and pays them a pittance for showing up. Everyone is obligated to participate twice year, working or not. Sorry to hear about your experience with the bad. The UBC training is second to none. Everything from door hardware certification, solid surface fabrication and installation, OSHA 10 & 30, Rigging, fall protection, confined space, lead paint, Scaffold, and a number of other certifications you can't get anywhere else in one place. Try not to confuse trade unions with industrial unions. Different animals.
  3. Are you talking about a "Dead Man"? We used them for an anchor point for bracing shear wall forms. The term was "Mafia block," which a quick search on Google tells me is still in use. Those cowboy hardhats are very common out here. So far, I've never seen the OSHA guys object to them. We work right through the winter and when it's pouring rain regular hardhats can be a real problem because the water just drips off the hat on onto whatever you're working on. The cowboy style hats channel it behind you. I also found this opinion from OSHA on the subject: https://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadis ... p_id=22673 New to me. Never heard them anything but dead men before. As far as those hats go, around here, on a union job, you're not wearing one.
  4. Are you talking about a "Dead Man"? We used them for an anchor point for bracing shear wall forms. If that cowboy hat is a hard hat, you can't wear one on a real construction site because the turned up brim can catch debris.
  5. Anybody here have a problem with the cleats if the those screws were replaced with the correct number of Ledger lock, GRK, or Simpson screws, that are rated for structural?
  6. I had a cat with six toes! Just saying.
  7. Nothing wrong with that repair. That material has proven to prevent millions in damage.
  8. It is, and has been for a while! Good job waiting it out. Since I built my cabinets out of walnut, It's going to be in style around here until I'm not. []
  9. I'm impressed the concrete around it hasn't blown apart after all these years.
  10. Hah. I was going to call it Tetris Stone. Perfect!
  11. Nice! Feel free, Chad. https://www.facebook.com/GTBIS/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel
  12. 40 hr OSHA scaffold certification, required before you can legally erect one. With decks, Uncle meanswell, Cousin thirty pack, and blind ambition, is all you need to build the same.

  14. If they are bees, you might better go shoot a lion than kill them and tell everyone about it.
  15. Then what? They were too stupid to shut off the car, or raise the overhead door?????
  16. I see both. Usually, the older doors are self closing.
  17. Here's your answer. [utube] " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="344">
  18. Les, I had read somewhere, that only 4 of the 50 states had any regulations. Got nothing to direct you to. I just remember seeing it.
  19. I'm more worried about the finger pointing. There isn't a snowball's chance in hell this won't come back on us. Now what? Are we going to need clients to sign off for the purpose of holding us harmless? Do we strongly urge everyone to have testing done regardless of the conditions? People tend to follow the loudest guy, with the brightest torch, and the biggest pitchfork. Somebody is going to get hung because of this. I don't want to be the first.
  20. What kind of headache will that create for the rest of us? I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling about it.
  21. They popped like they were wet. No new bubbles after that.
  22. As far as I know, I'm the only inspector who has set foot in this place since it was last sold ten years ago. I don't do soap tests. You think this could be from the original install? Why would it still be there? Click to Enlarge 52.43 KB
  23. Note to self. Do not buy 2x4s from anyone in Buffalo.
  24. I've got some that are nothing but a flat plastic rim, that come in different depths, for when I tile a backsplash.
  25. I did a house with two doors for one bathroom. So what? The only way to the back bedroom was through the bathroom. Not a good idea to be the last one up.
