  1. It was still in use... I told the client to 'remove it'.. 'not needed/frost-prone', etc ,etc.. Oddly, the house had a modern-vintage Buderus boiler.. you'd think the heating contractor would have made sure this was done at the time of installation of that boiler.... (No.. it was not "Rich Trethewey", though we see thousands of his company's work all the time around 'heeyah'... File under: Never Assume Anything.. I find tons of these all the time of course.. but never connected..

  6. Could be heat being retained by the nail-head...concentrating.. and somewhat changing the vinyl??? An IR shot would be a good idea to figure this out.. Sort of like when we see roofing nail heads 'cuting thru' asphalt on roofs that are poorly-ventilated... ?

  11. Amen Kurt.. how tall is that building???
  12. It's indeed a 'thing' (pattern) that I see around here once in a while folks... I just would call it a rusticated type pattern.. Newton MA is loaded with these houses.. Slate roofs, copper, stucco, brick, neglected lintels, termites, the steel windows that are 'heat-suckers'.. asbestos-insulation on old steam or gravity heat pipes, under-sized 'new' boilers, buried oil tanks..etc.. My biggest concern when I see these pop up is underground oil tanks..

  17. I explained that the switch was a 'fused-neutral' switch but 'devices' have been put in place of the fuses that eliminate the 'fusing' aspect.. I told them to change the switch out because there are 'live parts' in this box when you open it.. Those are cool looking little guys though... aren't they?
  18. more 'fun stuff' you never see anymore.. Outside Boston... 1931 house... former oil-burner fused-neutral emergency shut-off switch.. (hot).. Download Attachment: IMG_6588.JPG 67.28 KB

  21. Exterior if it is a veneer-situation... structure if the masonry is a load-bearing wall issue.. That's what I do anyways...
  22. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around.. does it make a sound though??? This thing is not gonna help much when the folks aren't home... right?
  23. http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/troublesh ... 61181.html It might be something like this.. ("might") Certainly has same cracking pattern in one of your photos..
