  1. I see very few wood shingle roofs but had one today. Some thought from the brain trust please. I see a couple of missing shingles and obviously the ridge sucks with all those loose shingles. The fungal growth on them doesn't bother me much. Should it? No leaks. Installed over dimensional rafters and plywood sheathing.
  2. Is the supply plumbed series or parallel?
  3. I shudder every time I go back and read my old reports from 15 years ago. What the hell was I thinking? Long confusing sentences that had to have confounded my readers were frequent in my reports back then. I've, since coming here many years ago, learned better. "It's a problem. It can cause damage or hurt you. Have it fixed." I'm lucky to have survived those years.
  4. The manufactured home lobby in Kentucky got involved in our law 12 years ago. Got it so that every home inspector had to have a 3 hour class on manufactured homes every year. 80 - 90 % of the inspectors have never (and say they will never) inspect a manufactured home. We managed to get it reduced to 3 hours every two years, then two hours every two years, but it's still hanging in there a bit. The one instructor qualified to teach the class, George Porter, produced a DVD for the state association that we've used that last several years. Content such as, "these are the window blinds", here we have the kitchen cabinets" (or close facsimile thereof). We sit in the class but attention span doesn't last very long. Hopes are that it will soon be an optional class for those who do inspect manufactured homes,.
  5. Some don't last so long. This 18 year old heater is bouncing rocks. Click to Enlarge 36.08 KB
  6. In Kentucky, the Kentucky Plumbing Code does not allow any Fernco fittings inside the residence.
  7. The old gas ranges had it there to control the light and controls.
  8. Well shit. I guess I missed some stuff.

    Ride along

I've taken probably 25 or 30 guys on ridealongs here in Central Kentucky. I take them with me on old houses with nasty crawl spaces and drag their ass clear to the back of the crawl space. Only three went on to have successful home inspection businesses. The rest either never really started or quit when they realized it wasn't the easy money the home inspection schools promised them.
  10. Marc, you might want to check Word Help for Column breaks and Section break Next Page. Or, as Bryan said, a two column table. Back in 2001 when I first began this gig, being VERY proficient in Word and Excel, I started to develop my own reports using Word and/or Excel. After a week or so of sitting in front of my computer working with it, I thought to myself: Do I want to be a computer programmer or a home inspector. I decided to be a home inspector and went out and bought software. I COULD have developed my own, over time. But my time is worth money and I'd rather spend it doing inspections than programming stuff on my computer. Haven't ever regretted my Home Gauge purchase, though I did regret my first software purchase of a competing product that shall remain nameless. Click to Enlarge 51.1 KB
  11. I've never seen a dryer fire either but according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 fires are sparked every year by clothes dryers.
  12. Patents never hurt. But how do you get in a 10 foot attic with a six foot ladder?

  14. Peeled that membrane right off the roof!
  15. $699 for 240 x 320 resolution. $399 for 120 x 160 resolution. Spend the extra $300 for the added resolution. You won't regret it.
  16. One reviewer seems to like it. I like the added resolution compared to the C2. http://blog.ivytools.com/2016/10/07/han ... d-flir-c2/
  17. Anything can be broken Tom. What did you do to break it?
  18. I rely on Otterboxes!
  19. I was using canvas type clip on pouches from Lowes several years ago. But they always got holes in them after awhile. Went to a leather maker, he laid out and made me a custom pouch that clips onto my belt. It holds all the stuff I use regularly (every inspection) so I always want it on me. $100 bucks or so and it's been years since I've had a problem with pouches. One of these days, I'll have to see if I can find the picture of me when I first started. Two big electrician pouches full of stuff on a belt. Dang, I looked good and ready for anything.
  20. I've been using a Surface Pro 3 with HomeGauge for the last couple of years. Very little issues. Never had any problems with the battery. That touch screen finger stuff was initially a pain in the ass, but once I got used to it, I write most of my reports with the finger.
  21. I called a couple of them out a few years ago for that. Was corrected by reading the manufacturer's instructions. It's allowed for some of them.
  22. Well, actually: Click to Enlarge 45.34 KB Just enough for my CYA statement that there is some. But the sweet tea and ribs took it all away!
  23. So, I've got a back door to a new construction house with just steps on the outside of the door. The local AHJ has already blessed it. There are only two exterior doors: the front door and this door in the pictures. Click to Enlarge 51.18 KB Click to Enlarge 49.7 KB Click to Enlarge 34.7 KB Click to Enlarge 57.61 KB There is no landing. The distance from the door opening to the first step is 5 7/8". The steps are both 7 1/4". Does it need a landing? I think so but the local code guys obviously disagree having already approved it. R311.3.1 says it does as it is a "required egress door". 24. Hah, and I thought my 220 pCi/l was high!
  25. "Some of Us" have understood that for a long time, Michael.
